The effects of drinking absinthe liquor.
One of the ingredients called thujone is of major importance
in absinthe liquor, a substance released by the wormwood plant which in large
quantities can cause hallucinations and other side effects. Today in Germany and
other European countries the maximum content permitted by the law is 10
milligram per kilogram, Absinthe liquor which is declared as "bitter
spirit" is allowed to contain up to 35 mg thujone per kg. Unfortunately an
increasing amount of spirits are recently being sold under the name of Absinthe
although they actually don't have anything to do with the real thing These pastes only contain artificial aromas of
absinthe and have no other effect than that of the alcohol...
The effect of real absinthe liquor can be mood-brightening,
stimulating, even euphorizing. It sometimes also acts as an aphrodisiac. The famous Oscar Wilde describes his own
absinthe drinking experiences as follows: "After the first glass you see
things as you wish they were. After the second, you see things as they are not.
Finally you see things as they really are, and that is the most horrible thing
in the world."
The best way to drink Absinthe liquor
Start b y pouring 2 to 4cl (about a tenth pint) of Absinthe liquor
into a proper Absinthe Glass. Then dilute ice-cold water (3-5 parts) as you
like. You then put one or two lumps of
sugar on an Absinthe Spoon and pour Absinthe liquor over it. You light up the
sugar and wait until the flames caramelize it, then you use water to guide the
sugar softly into the Absinthe. (Lighting
the absinthe liquor is optional as some say that this steals the real fragrance
and flavor away from it)
In France
they put one or two lumps of sugar on an Absinthe Spoon placed over the glass
filled with an amount of Absinthe liquor and then gently pour water over the
spoon. In the former times so-called “Absinthe Fountains”, “brouille sets” and
“reservoir glasses” (we have all these
absinthe liquor accessories available in our store.) were widely used to
dissolve the sugar with a thin beam of water. Suisse “La Bleue” Absinthe is
served traditionally just with cold water.
Modern Absinthe drinking Footnote
Today, modern absinthes are often marketed in conjunction
with the so-called Bohemian absinthe ritual. This is not a traditional method,
but a modern innovation inspired by the success of flaming sambuca and such like.
A shot of absinthe is poured into a glass, and a teaspoonful of sugar is dipped
into it. The alcohol soaked sugar is set alight and allowed to burn until it
bubbles and caramelises. The spoon of melted sugar is then plunged into the
absinthe and stirred in, which usually sets the absinthe itself alight.
Ice water is then poured in, dousing the flames. This method has become increasingly popular, especially since it was shown in the film “Moulin Rouge”, but is a historical travesty, and would have horrified any Belle Epoque absintheur.
